A medical trauma refers to a serious or critical bodily injury or wound. A psychological trauma is just as much an injury as a medical trauma but it is more difficult to locate because it is emotional. An emotional wound is caused by something painful, distressing or shocking. Some emotional traumas are easier to identify, like the violence soldiers are exposed to in war, domestic violence, rape or a natural disaster, because there is an identifiable assault.

But there is also trauma inflicted by betrayal within a trusted relationship. The difficulty identifying abuse is higher when a betrayal takes place with a close, trusted, caretaker. If you have any question about whether or not you have been betrayed by a caretaking professional or other relationship talking to a psychologist can help you to determine this.
